I’ve learned that sometimes you even have to nudge the non-profit board members that elected you to accomplish what they elected you to do. Viewing it as nudging rather than nagging should help me in my further endeavors. Thanks!

You are so right. So often, as Development Directors, you get bogged down with the fire that is burning closest to your feet. I read recently that the ONLY thing a development staff should be doing is raising money. If we are going to be successful, sometimes we just have to close our door, concentrate on the task at hand and not join in for the hunt for paper towels that should be right here in the kitchen. (unless of course you are the one standing there with dripping hands!)

Janet, I enjoyed your post. Research reveals that the number one determinant factor of whether someone will make a bequest commitment to a charitable organization is whether or not the individual has children. Research also shows that the key determinant factor of which particular nonprofit a donor will make a bequest commitment to is loyalty, as you’ve suggested. Nice article. I agree with you on the point that we need to ask for charitable gifts at the right time in a right way. Not asking does not help at all in fundraising. By asking we give people an opportunity that they look forward to in most cases. Usually, people are generous and wanting to give.
